Professional Certificate in Accounting

An Accounting Certificate from UCR Extension will open doors for career opportunities in companies large and small, government offices and the nonprofit sector. Whether it's for tax planning and auditing or budget analysis and preparing financial statements, accountants are continually sought after to provide support to almost every type of organization.

Participants in the certificate program will:

  • Meet one of the state of California's requirements to sit for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam.
  • Understand and be able to apply important accounting principles to private, public and nonprofit organizations.
  • Understand how to meet legal and regulatory requirements necessary to perform public accounting functions for clients.
  • Be able to analyze financial statements.
  • Be prepared to advise clients regarding important financial reporting requirements, strategic financial decisions and other matters related to accounting practice.

Who Can Benefit?

This program is designed for individuals who are in the financial services industry, business students, financial assistants, and others who have good technical skills and/or are interested in pursuing a course of study in accounting and related topics.

International Students

If you are an international student, special fees apply to all courses and certificates listed on this website. This Certificate is part of the Academic Year Certificate Program in Accounting. You must begin the program in the fall and finish in the spring. You cannot enroll in these classes online. Learn more.

If you are in the University Credit Program (UCP) you may take individual courses that have varying start dates but you cannot enroll online. You must enroll through your student advisor or learn more about UCP here.

Completion Information

Completion Requirements

To earn the certificate, students must successfully complete (grade C or better) a total of 36 units: 32 required units and four elective units.

Completion Time

The program can typically be completed in twelve to eighteen months. All coursework must be completed within five years.

Cost

The cost of this program is approximately $5,900. This does not include textbooks and materials unless otherwise noted.

Transfer Credit

Equivalent courses from other accredited colleges and universities completed within the last three years will be considered for transfer, up to a total of 4 units. All requests must be in writing and students must have paid the certificate application fee. Official transcripts are required.
