Clear Credential Program


The CTC-Approved Clear Credential program focuses on clearing your Multiple or Single Subject teaching credential and is geared specifically toward teachers who do not have an induction program available through their school disctrict. The Clear Credential program is designed to provide professional development to qualified teachers in an effort to fully prepare them to meet the academic learning needs of all students in their care.

Completing the Clear Credential program is the most streamlined and cost-effective way to clear your Preliminary Credential. It provides a flexible and convenient route to teacher credentialing, and offers several benefits that are specifically unique to the UCR Extension program:

Who Can Benefit?

This program is designed for credentialed teachers who have a full-time or part-time teaching position in a school/school district or charter/private school, hold a valid SB 2042 Preliminary Multiple or Single Subject California Teaching Credential (issued on or after August 30, 2004), and can secure clear California credentialed site support teacher who holds the same academic area credential.

Completion Requirements

The UCR Extension Clear Credential program requires employed teachers to complete 19 quarter units (grade of B or better) of postgraduate study in curriculum and instruction, pedagogical skills, assessing student learning, teaching English learners, teaching special populations, and educational technology. Credential Candidates are also required to obtain a site support teacher. The site support teacher must hold a valid Clear CA Credential in the same academic area as you (ex. If you hold a Math credential, your support teacher must hold a valid, clear Math credential), possess a Master's degree or higher, and be accessible for conducting observations and mentoring on an on-going basis.

Teachers that are unable to secure a site support teacher who holds the same credential type will not qualify for the program. For further information please contact the Credentials Office.

Completion Time

This program can typically be completed in 5 quarters (no courses are offered during the summer).


The cost to complete this program is approximately $3,300. This does not include textbooks or materials unless otherwise noted.


Candidates for this program must submit the following in order to be considered for the program:

  1. Completed Application Form
  2. Nonrefundable $50 application fee
  3. Official transcripts of all college coursework indicating a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher in your Bachelor’s Degree
  4. Copy of your California SB 2042 Preliminary Multiple or Single Subject credential
  5. Official, sealed verification of passage of the CBEST or its equivalent
  6. Completed and signed CL-855 Verification of Unavailability of a Commission-Approved Induction Program form
  7. Three Letters of Recommendation/Professional References that reflect your academic competence and teaching performance (signed, dated; no more than a year old, and written for the purpose of the program
  8. Site Support Teacher checklist signed by your principal.
  9. Copy of your Site Support Teacher’s clear credential
  10. Statement of Purpose
    • Describe in detail, the interpersonal, affective and intellectual strengths of an individual whom you consider a model teacher. Give instances from your own experiences which reflect these same qualities (minimum 500 words).
    • Describe in detail, strategies, staff development, or committees that you have participated in that promoted diversity and multi-cultural competency. Give instances from your own experiences in which you have demonstrated multi-cultural competency that resulted in student success. Additionally, state future goals as a teacher that will strengthen/build your multi-cultural competency (minimum 500 words).

Competency Rubrics

Rubrics must be submitted to credentials@ucx.ucr.edu by the end date of each course. Failure to submit rubrics on time will result in delayed recommendation to the CTC.
