Professional Certificate in Interior Design

Take your love of HGTV to the next level and learn how to make a living creating beautiful, functional spaces for the home or office. Master techniques that open up new creative possibilities, establish good business practices, and develop a portfolio that best reflects your style.

Step into a new era of interior design. Study the basics of color theory, drafting, and furniture along with current trends in sustainability, building codes and architecture. On the "business side," learn about contracts, setting fees, and professional resources. Study with practicing professionals who have successfully made their way, and transform your passion into a new career.

Participants in the program will learn:

  • Fundamentals of interior design principles, materials and resources
  • Drafting designs for residential and commercial space
  • Essentials of color theory, furniture design, and space planning
  • Professional presentation skills and business practices
  • History of architectural interiors and latest trends and techniques

What You Can Do

Certification and experience can prepare you for positions which are available in a variety of industries all over the world, and can be found in self-employment, firms, government, or nonprofit organizations. They might include:

  • Interior designer or decorator
  • Project manager
  • Workplace design leader

Completion Information

Completion Requirements

To earn the certificate, students must successfully complete (grade C or better) a total of 43 quarter units; 30 required and 13 elective.

Completion Time

The program can typically be completed within two years.

Note: This certificate has been revised. Students who began this program prior to Fall 2015 will fall under the completion requirements stated in the academic year in which they began the program..


The cost to complete this program is $4,800-$5,600. This cost does not include textbooks or materials, unless otherwise noted.

What You Should Know


We recommend you take these in order:

  1. Introduction to Interior Design
  2. Color Theory and Its Application
  3. Drafting I


Upon successful completion of our program, you earn a Professional Certificate in Interior Design, but professional certification is a separate, optional process.

  • You must pass the NCIDQ examination to become certified.
  • The eligibility requirements reflect the guiding principle that at least six years combined of college-level interior design education and interior design work experience are essential to prepare you for the examination and professional practice.

Transfer Credit

You may be eligible to get up to six units of transfer credit, under the following conditions:

  • Must be equivalent course(s) from other accredited college(s) or university(-ies) completed within the last five years.
  • Official transcripts are required.
  • Submit a request in writing.

Unless otherwise noted:

  • All coursework must be completed within five years.
  • Cost does not include textbooks and materials.
