Professional Certificate in Interior Design

Interior designers need to be creative, imaginative and artistic. They also need to be disciplined, organized and skilled business people. Combining creative elements involving color, texture and shape with more functional elements, such as space planning and lighting, interior design is an exciting form of expression that gives people beautiful spaces in which to live, work and play. The UCR Extension Interior Design Certificate Program gives students the knowledge and skills to become successful interior designers.

Participants in the program will learn important fundamentals in areas such as:

  • Drafting
  • Color theory
  • Business practices
  • Portfolio presentation
  • Trends and techniques

Who Can Benefit?

This program is designed for people who are highly motivated to enter the design field. It is also appropriate for anyone who might benefit personally or professionally from directed study and practice in interior design. A background in art or design is helpful, but not required.

Completion Information

Completion Requirements

To earn the certificate, students must successfully complete (grade C or better) a total of 34 quarter units: eight required courses (24 units) and 10 units of electives.

Students should start with Introduction to Interior Design followed by Color Theory and Its Application and Drafting I.

Completion Time

The program can typically be completed in 18 months to two years. All coursework must be completed within five years.


The cost to complete the program is approximately $4,000. This does not include textbooks or materials unless otherwise noted.

Transfer Credit

Equivalent courses from other accredited colleges and universities completed within the last five years will be considered for transfer, up to a total of six units. Official transcripts are required.

To become a certified interior designer, one must pass the NCIDQ Examination. The eligibility requirements reflect the guiding principle that at least six years combined of college-level interior design education and interior design work experience are essential to prepare you for the examination and professional practice.
