Professional Certificate in Land Use and Environmental Planning
The UCR Extension Land Use and Environmental Planning Certificate program will provide you with a working knowledge of urban planning as it is currently practiced in governmental and private sectors.
Participants in this certificate program will:
- Learn theories and methods needed to perform in the planning arena
- Understand policies and legislation that pertain to the land use planning and regulatory powers of local government
- Understand the political, social and economic forces at work in our urban and natural environments
Who Can Benefit?
This program is designed for land use planners, resource managers and professionals in related fields such as real estate, engineering, landscape architecture, law, public health, and facility management.

Completion Information
Completion Requirements
To earn the certificate, students must successfully complete (grade C or better) 28 units: four required courses and 12 units of electives. Six CEUs can be used in lieu of elective units.
It is recommended that you begin with Introduction to Land Use Planning Practices. You may complete the program in a sequence that best fits your schedule.
Completion Time
The program takes approximately 12-18 months to complete.
Cost
The cost for the certificate program ranges from approximately $4,200-$5,100. This does not include textbooks or materials unless otherwise noted. California Chapter members of the American Planning Association receive a 10% discount on any course applicable to the Certificate in Land Use and Environmental Planning.
