Professional Certificate in Teaching Advanced Placement®

Online Program

Teaching an Advanced Placement Program course is a rewarding yet demanding assignment because teachers must provide students with an intellectual experience comparable to their freshman year at college. Since both AP® course content and examinations are continually revised, AP teachers must remain updated on any changes.

The only one of its kind in the nation, the UCR Extension Teaching Advanced Placement Certificate Program has been developed in collaboration with the College Board and provides teachers with content knowledge, pedagogical skills, leadership approaches, and the latest instructional strategies for teaching AP classes.

Topics covered in this certificate program include:

  • Overview of Advanced Placement Program
  • Examination preparation
  • Philosophy and process for scoring exams
  • Grading procedures
  • Role of vertical teams
  • Who should take Advanced Placement Program classes
  • Relationship of honors and other classes that lead to an Advanced Placement Program course
  • Integration of technology into AP courses

Who Can Benefit?

Teachers and administrators involved in teaching AP classes. This program is open to anyone who has an undergraduate major or its equivalent in an academic content area or related field offered in the certificate program. Individuals not pursuing a certificate may enroll in any course with the instructor's approval and if all prerequisites have been met.
