Crime Scene Investigation Summer Certificate

July 7 – August 8, 2014

Whether you are preparing to enter the field of CSI, or you want to improve your current skills and expertise, this intensive program is ideal. You receive intensive, in-depth exposure on the basics of forensic science; learn how to perform crime scene investigations; study crime scene management; and practice the technical skills required to sample, photograph and recover evidence at a crime scene. The 20-unit certificate program offers professional level instruction from industry professionals with real-world experience. Planned field trips include visits to local crime labs, coroner's office and the "Evening with the Experts" lecture series held in July.

  • How to perform crime scene investigations.
  • The basics of crime scene management, including the proper collection and preservation of evidence and chain-of-custody issues.
  • The technical skills to sample, photograph and recover evidence at a crime scene.

Completion Information

Completion Requirements

To earn the certificate, students must successfully complete (grade C or better) a total of 20 units.

Seventeen units can be completed during the CSI Summer Academy.

The 3-unit course, Introduction to Criminal Law and Procedure, is not part of the CSI Summer Academy, but is required to earn the certificate. The course can be taken at UCR Extension or the requirement for it can be satisfied with an equivalent course transferred from another accredited college or university.

Completion Time

The summer academy can be completed in five weeks, July 7 - August 8, 2014.

Cost

Fee includes all materials, books, parking, transportation for field visits, and welcome and farewell receptions.

Reserve your place by paying a $500 deposit, with the balance due on or before July 7. Call Student Services at (951) 827-4105. (Deposit is nonrefundable after June 6.)

No refunds of any kind will be granted after July 3, 2014.
