Types of classes offered online

There are four delivery methods for classes offered online.

  • Instructor-led, asynchronous

All class activities are conducted online. Students complete work online and interact with classmates and instructor through online discussion boards. Some courses may also include live chat sessions. Instructor provides assignments, answers questions, leads discussions and grades student work.

  • Live Webcasts and Archives

This virtual classroom employs live video and audio, and offers the opportunity to observe and discuss ideas with other online students, classroom students and instructors. If you miss a class, the archival feature allows you to view it later.

  • Self-paced Courses

Start and complete courses at times of your choosing. All course materials are available online and can be reviewed at the time that works best for you.

  • Blended/Hybrid Learning

These courses combine face-to-face instruction with online discussion, quizzes and other activities. The proportion of face-to-face to online meetings varies from class to class.

The style of online learning depends upon several factors, including instructor and departmental preferences, and the location of students in the class. See the specific class description for more information.
