NetID Frequently Asked Questions
What is a UCR NetID and why do I need one?
UCR NetID is a unique identifier for each employee, faculty or student connected with UCR. At UCR Extension, the NetID provides access to Moodle, the campus wireless network and other campus resources.
Who needs a UCR NetID?
- Students enrolled in a UCR Extension course using Moodle.
- Students enrolled in a UCR Extension course which uses campus services such as the wireless network.
- All students enrolled in International Education Programs.
- UCR Extension instructors using Moodle or needing access to the campus wireless network.
If you are in one of the above groups, UCR Extension will send you an e-mail with the information needed to set up a UCR NetID account.
Temporary NetIDs are available for conference attendees who need to use the campus wireless network.
What is the NetID process for students at UCR Extension?
- When you register for an online course, or a face-to-face or hybrid course which uses Moodle, you will receive an e-mail message confirming your enrollment. Within 48 hours, you will receive a second e-mail with information about setting up your UCR NetID.
- Use the temporary login ID and temporary password sent in the UCR NetID e-mail to create your NetID.
- Your NetID provides access to the campus wireless network and other services, as well as to UCR Extension's Moodle courses.
- Once your online course ends, your NetID will remain active for one quarter if you are not enrolled in another class.
- If you are a student in a certificate program at UCR Extension, your NetID remains active for six months.
- If you withdraw from your only UCR Extension course, your NetID is active for one additional week.
- If you are an instructor, your NetID is active for one year following your last class.
I already have a NetID. Do I need a new one for a UCR Extension course?
Once you have obtained a NetID, it remains yours indefinitely.
- If you already have a NetID, please do not create another one.
- If your NetID is inactive, you will receive an e-mail with instructions on how to reactivate it once you register for another course requiring a NetID.
- If you had a UCR campus NetID prior to November 2007, you can update it to the new NetID system.
I need help setting up my NetID. What should I do?
Step-by-step help is available for setting up your NetID. You can also send an e-mail message to netidhelp@ucx.ucr.edu to get help with the NetID process. Please describe your NetID issue and someone will get back to you within two hours between 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturdays.
I signed up for an online course but have not received an e-mail about setting up a NetID. What should I do?
- If you do not already have a NetID, you should have received an e-mail about setting one soon after you registered for your first online course (within two hours).
- If you have not received the e-mail, check your junk mail folder.
- If there's nothing in your junk mail folder, send an e-mail message to netidhelp@ucx.ucr.edu and ask to have your NetID e-mail re-sent.
I registered for an online course and had to set up an account with UCR Extension. Isn't that my NetID?
These are two separate accounts. The UCR Extension account is only used to register for courses. The NetID gives you access to online courses, the campus wireless network and library resources and is a separate account.
Why can't I use my NetID from my workplace when it works from home?
Check with the network administrator at your workplace to see if security settings are blocking your ability to use your NetID.
