1. Do I have to come to Riverside to take online classes?

No. All of the online courses are offered in the convenience of your home or office.

2. What do you mean, "course opens ..."?

The date on which a course opens means that you can access the course on that day or afterward. Assignments, readings, etc. are all listed on the course syllabus. You may access the course at any time convenient for you. Keep in mind however, that there are timed assignments and discussion forums in which you are required to participate.

3. What are scheduled chat sessions and discussion forums?

Chat sessions are similar to office hours with the instructor. These times are scheduled to let you communicate with the instructor live (like instant-messaging). These are usually for a one-hour time period.

Discussion forums are where the instructor poses a question and the students are to write back their thoughts and analyses. All students are able to read each other's discussion replies. Several discussion forums are posted in each course and replies must be made within the specified timeframe.

4. I have never participated in an online course before. Is it hard to learn?

UCR Extension uses the Moodle online format in this program. Once in the system, you will quickly learn how to maneuver through the various components. Previous experience with using the Internet is helpful. The flexibility that asynchronous learning provides is like a double-edged sword. It affords you the opportunity to take classes irrespective of your personal and professional commitments because you proceed through the course on your own schedule. On the other hand, a greater degree of self discipline is required to avoid falling behind. We recommend that you scan the entire course to familiarize yourself with the contents and establish your own personal due dates to stay on schedule. All work must be completed prior to the final exam date as indicated for the course.

5. I've registered for a class. Now what do I do?

Once you have registered for a class, we will send you an e-mail that provides the logon instructions. Course information such as the chat session dates and book requirements are also included.

6. Who do I contact if I have technical difficulties?

Please contact UCR Extension at sciences@ucx.ucr.edu or call (951) 827-5804.

7. I am interested in taking only one or two of the courses. Do I have to enroll in the entire certificate program or are courses available for individual enrollment?

All courses are open for individual enrollment. Please be aware that some courses may require a prerequisite.

8. How long will it take me to complete the certificate?

Courses are scheduled one at a time. If you take each course when it is offered, it should take you one year to complete all the required courses.

9. I do not live in California (or the US). Can I still participate?

Absolutely! There are no geographic boundaries. All courses are online and use the Internet and e-mail.

10. What type of units are earned in this program? Can I transfer this credit to a degree?

The units earned in the required classes are "post-graduate professional level" credit designed for professional and occupational advancement. All required courses are letter-graded and have undergone a rigorous approval process by UC Riverside. If you are interested in using this program for credit toward a degree, check first with the college or university granting the degree. Requirements and policies regarding the transfer of credit differ among institutions.

11. Is there a specific sequence in which the courses must be taken?

No. You can start the program with any of the courses based on their availability and your schedule. It is recommended that you take the Effective Case Management courses early in your course of study.

12. How much does it cost to complete the entire certificate?

Tuition for all courses is approximately $3200-$3500. This fee does not include textbooks or materials.

13. Is this Certificate approved for Veterans Education Benefits?

Yes, please call Julie at (951) 827-4105 for more information.
