CLAD through CTEL Certificate Program
(Cross-cultural Language and Academic Development Through California Teachers of English Learners)
CLAD Requirements
The two general California requirements for earning the CLAD Certificate are:
- Possession of an appropriate prerequisite credential
- One of the following:
a. Passage of a CLAD examination.
b. Completion of a specified number of units of appropriate college coursework.
These two requirements can be satisfied in any order, as long as they are satisfied upon application for the certificate. To meet California academic requirements, participants must complete 18 quarter units.
Transfer of Credit
Courses taken through another University of California CLAD program may be used to fulfill UCR Extension program requirements as appropriate. Courses taken through either UCLA or UCSD’s CLAD Through CTEL Certificate program are completely transferable.
State Academic Requirements
The Commission on Teacher Credentialing requires that all coursework be verified by an official transcript from the institutions where work is completed with a grade of "C" or higher.
Filing for the Certificate
Once all state requirements have been met, participants may apply to the State Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) for the CLAD Certificate. This is done through the UC CLAD facilitatory. A $25 fee is required at this time. The UC Riverside Extension CLAD Inservice Coordinator can provide assistance with the application process; call (951) 827-3912.
