Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) Academy

Earn the CSI Certificate in one summer.

During the CSI Academy you receive instruction in the entire certificate program curriculum in 4 weeks. This intensive format makes the CSI Academy particularly attractive to people who live some distance from UCR Extension and to those who have the summer open for continuing education.

Program requirements
To earn the certificate, participants must earn a grade of C or better in all courses.

Instructors
CSI Academy instructors are practitioners and experts in the field of CSI. They provide real-world expertise and hands-on instruction.

  • Impression evidence
  • Crime scene photography
  • Criminalistics
  • Autopsy and medicolegal death investigation
  • Blood stain pattern analysis
  • Forensic entomology

Prerequisite
Completion of an introductory criminal law and procedure course or similar course from an accredited institution; or Soc X4 or Law X445 offered by UCR Extension. Official transcript required. Contact the program representative if you have any questions. This course may be completed before or after completing the CSI Academy.*

*Certificate cannot be awarded until official transcript is received.

Activities
Group receptions allow participants in the program to meet informally and promote networking. Field trips planned include visits to:

  • DOJ Crime Lab in Riverside
  • City of Riverside CSI Lab
  • San Bernardino Office of the Coroner

(Transportation is provided to field visits.)

Criminal Profiling and Crime Analysis with Dr. Phoebe Kelsoe, Retired Manager, Crime Analysis Unit, Special Investigations Bureau, Riverside County Sheriff's Department. Dr. Kelsoe received training from the Behavioral Science Unit of the FBI's Violent Criminal Apprehension Program (VICAP). She provides consultant services to law enforcement agencies requesting her assistance in the investigation of serial rape, homicide and unusual death cases. She also served as a member of the Founding Committee for the Crime and Intelligence Analysis Certification Program, which is co-sponsored by the California Department of Justice.

Accommodations
The program fee does not include accommodations. Residential facilities on the UC Riverside campus may be available. For campus residential information visit iep.ucr.edu/housing.html or www.ucr-iv.com. Note: These residential options are available for all participants of the program, domestic and international. The International office at UCR Extension coordinates all on-campus housing for Extension participants.

Private apartments within walking distance may also be available.

What your day is like
The first day of classes begins with a welcome breakfast. We introduce each other and acquaint you with the facility. Plan on six-eight hours of classroom time each day six days/week, which also include hands-on time learning and practicing techniques and methodologies. Watch for the finalized calendar with specific details for each day.

Materials needed

Fees and Enrollment
Tuition: $3600. Enrollment is limited.
CSI Academy fees include course fees, application fee for the certificate, parking, and materials for hands-on course work (except where noted), field trips with transportation and group receptions. Accommodations, meals and transportation to and from UC Riverside are not included. To ensure a place in the program, please send a $500 deposit (nonrefundable after June 1). The balance of the fee is due no later than the first day of class. (You may enroll in individual courses subject to space availability.)

Refunds and cancellations
$500 of the course deposit is nonrefundable after June 1. The full tuition for any courses started is also nonrefundable. An additional $250 fee will be assessed if a student decides to drop the CSI Academy at any time during the summer program. For those who enroll in individual courses, all refunds will be processed according to UCR Extension policy.
