1. Do I have to start the program with
the "Introduction to Forensic Science" course? Are the
courses offered in sequence?
You can start the program with any of the courses. We recommend
that you take the Introduction course near the beginning of your
studies if possible. You can take the courses in any order based
on their availability and your schedule.
2. Do I have to come to Riverside to
take the classes?
No. All of the courses are offered online in the convenience
of your home or office.
3. What do you mean, "the course
opens" on ...?
The date on which a course opens means that you can access the
course on that day or afterward. Assignments, readings, etc.
are all listed on the course syllabus. You may access the course
at any time convenient for you. Keep in mind however, that there
are timed assignments and discussion forums in which you are
required to participate.
4. What are scheduled chat sessions and
discussion forums?
Chat sessions are optional. A live chat session (like instant-messaging) is
a scheduled date and time when the class can communicate with the instructor live. Rarely does an instructor schedule a chat session. The most common communication method between instructor and student is via e-mail.
Discussion forums are where the instructor poses a question and the students
are to write back their thoughts and analyses. These are usually graded
assignments. All students are able to read and reply to each other's
discussion answer. Several discussion forums are posted in each course and
replies must be made within the specified timeframe. Detailed instructions
are always provided in the course materials.
5. I have never participated in an online
course before. Is it hard to learn?
UCR Extension uses the Moodle online format in
this program. Once in the system, you will quickly learn
how to maneuver through the various components. Previous experience
with using the Internet is helpful. The flexibility that asynchronous
learning provides is like a double-edged sword. It affords you
the opportunity to take classes irrespective of your personal
and professional commitments because you proceed through the
course on your own schedule. On the other hand, a greater degree
of self discipline is required to avoid falling behind. We recommend
that you scan the entire course to familiarize yourself with
the contents and establish your own personal due dates to stay
on schedule. All work must be completed prior to the final exam
date as indicated for the course.
6. I've registered for a class. Now what
do I do?
Once you have registered for a class, we will send you an e-mail
that provides the logon instructions. Course information such
as the chat session dates and book requirements are also included.
You will receive an enrollment receipt confirming your registration
and payment in the mail. Within 7-10 days of the course begin
date, you will receive an e-mail from the Extension program coordinator
explaining the course requirements and instructions for obtaining
your Blackboard logon.
7. Who do I contact if I have technical
difficulties?
Please contact UCR Extension at investigate@ucx.ucr.edu or
call (951) 827-5804. At this time, we do not operate a 24/7 help
desk. We check our e-mail everyday and will respond to your question
within 24 hours.
8. I am interested in taking only one
or two of the courses. Do I have to enroll in the entire certificate
program or are courses available for individual enrollment?
All courses are open for individual enrollment. Please be aware
that some courses may require a prerequisite.
9. How long will it take me to complete
the Certificate?
Courses are scheduled one at a time. If you take each course
when it is offered,it should take you one year to complete all
the required courses.
10. What are the electives? How can
I earn these 2 units?
The electives can be courses or seminars you have attended that
earned CEUs or academic units. The subject matter must pertain
to forensics. For example, if you attend a forensic nurse seminar
and earned BRN credit, it may apply toward the electives. 10
hours=1 unit. A transcript must be submitted to UC Riverside
Extension prior to accepting the course towards your elective
requirement. We recommend that you contact Extension to be sure
the course or seminar applies to the program before enrolling.
Online elective units are under development.
11. How much will it cost to complete
this program?
Our best estimation for the cost of completing the program, including tuition & textbooks, is $4200 to $4400.
12. I do not live in California (or
the US). Can I still participate?
Absolutely! There are no geographic boundaries. All courses
are online and use the Internet and e-mail.
13. What type of units are earned in
this program? Can I transfer this credit to a degree?
The units earned in the required classes are "post-graduate
professional level" credit designed for professional and
occupational advancement. All required courses are letter-graded
and have undergone a rigorous approval process by UC Riverside.
If you are interested in using this program for credit toward
a degree, check first with the college or university granting
the degree. Requirements and policies regarding the transfer
of credit differ among institutions.
14. Can I use my work e-mail address
in this program? Can I use my AOL e-mail address?
We recommend that you do not use your work e-mail address for
taking these courses. Many businesses, especially government
agencies, utilize security firewalls. Communication from the
instructor, the University or other students may not get through
and you will not see the message. We also do not recommend you
use AOL, for similar reasons. AOL accounts include spam prevention-type
filters and our communication with you may filtered-out. We recommend
you obtain a separate e-mail account for your course work, separate
from your family's or work. Yahoo.com and MSN.com offer
free e-mail accounts.
15. After I complete the program, am
I a "certified forensic nurse"?
The Certificate in Forensic Nursing is an academic Certificate.
Completion of this program does not mean you are "certified." Most
certifications are administered by a professional association
and require a combination of education, experience and the passing
of a comprehensive exam.
16. Is this Certificate approved for Veterans Education Benefits?
Yes, please call Julie at (951) 827-4105 for more information.
17. I am an international student. Can I take these courses? How do I enroll?
Yes, you may enroll and complete these online courses. There are no geographic boundaries for learning online. Unfortunately, you will not be able to enroll online. To enroll, please call in your enrollment and credit card information to the numbers on this link: http://www.extension.ucr.edu/register.html
