Explore volcanic hazard areas near Mammoth Mountain in UCR Extension's field studies course
RIVERSIDE, CALIF. – Spend a weekend this August exploring the volcanic hazard areas around Mammoth Mountain, a large lava dome complex that lies to the west of the town of Mammoth Lakes, California. The class, Geology and Volcanic Hazards of Mammoth Mountain, meets from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday on Aug. 23 and 24, 2008 near Mammoth Lakes. Once students enroll, they will receive specific information about meeting locations and the campground where they will stay.
Geology instructor Gary Arce, who just finished a mountain trekking trip in Russia, will discuss volcanic processes and eruptive styles while leading students through the Mammoth Mountain region. Mammoth Mountain was formed from a long series of eruptions that started 110,000 years ago. The eruptions lasted about 60,000 years. Though Mammoth Mountain is a living volcano, most eruptions today are minor.
The fee for this class is $189/$175 each for couples and family members/$160 each with a PINE discount.
