UCR Extension workshop focuses on tree management in parks and golf courses

RIVERSIDE, CALIF. – UCR Extension is offering a one-day workshop titled, "Tree Management in Parks, Golf Courses and Other Large Turf Areas," which focuses on tree management in large turf settings for arborists and other tree professionals. The workshop will be held on Wednesday, May 7 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at UCR Extension, 1200 University Ave., Riverside.

This program helps turf and landscape facilities managers address both the technical and liability aspects of tree management in parks, golf courses and other properties that combine turf with trees. Topics include understanding competition issues between turf and trees, mitigating the impact of shade on turf, selecting the appropriate trees, developing tree inventories, instituting cultural practices that enhance the quality of both trees and turf, and the liabilities associated with tree failure.

The professionals who will be presenting at this workshop are: Pat Gross, director of the Southwest Region of USGA; Susan Sims, owner of Sims Tree Health Specialists, Inc.; Janet Hartin, horticulture advisor for the University of California, Cooperative Extension, San Bernardino and Los Angeles Counties; Steve Reis, a UCR research associate in UCR's Agricultural Relations; Z. Gordon Davidson, owner of Z. Gordon Davidson & Associates; Mike Ritenour, senior project manager of Ecosystems Restoration Associates; Mike Huck, owner of Irrigation and Turfgrass Services; and Bill Baker, owner of William Baker & Associates.
