The Fabliaux: Medieval Tales

Chaucer's Canterbury Tales

The Fabliaux are often referred to as a collection of bawdy and naughty tales. But it is more than that. It is window into the culture of medieval society, which is popularly remembered as a time for kings and queens and courtly airs. A fabliau, or little fable, is a picture of the seamier side of life. These tales, told by jugglers during the 13th and 14th centuries in England and France, feature crooked priests, loose women, and cuckolded men. They depict life in the middle and lower classes, and often came attached with a moral suggestion about how to live life. Osher members will read and discuss such selections as The Butcher of Abbeville, The Tresses and The Miller’s Tale starting July 10.
