T’ai Chi Ch’uan, an ancient Chinese practice, combines slow, graceful physical movements with the single-pointed attention of the mind to bring about a calm and meditative state in the individual. T’ai Chi Ch’uan is one of the fastest growing fitness activities in the United States. Western medical studies confirm what the Chinese have always said: the regular practice of T’ai Chi Ch’uan reduces blood pressure, increases circulation, improves balance, increases flexibility and strength, reduces levels of stress, improves immune function and heightens mood. In Osher’s summer class, instructor Harvey Kurland teaches a short sequence of movements and energy exercises designed to increase well-being. Easy to practice, these movements can form the basis of a personal exercise routine.
