Troubleshooting Blackboard for Students

Common Problems and Possible Solutions

  1. I can't log in at ilearn.ucr.edu.
  2. I can log in but I can't see the course.
  3. I can log in but I can't see any/some of the course content.
  4. I uploaded my work to the digital drop box but the instructor can't see it.

1. I can't log in at ilearn.ucr.edu.

Do you have a login and password?

Yes: Check the following:

Is your CAPS LOCK key pressed? Passwords are case sensitive.

Are you using AOL? You will need to use a separate browser, not the AOL browser. Firefox or Internet Explorer will work best. This is also true for MSN and any other service which uses a custom browser.

Are you at work? A corporate firewall may block communication with Blackboard. Check with the site administrator at work.

Are you at home? Windows security may be set too high. Check for any firewalls, pop-up blockers or other security software which may interfere with Blackboard.

No:

If you have already registered for the course, your password will be e-mailed to you within one business day of your registration.

If you registered more than one business day prior to today, check your junk mail folder for the login and password information if you can't find it in your e-mail account.

If the login and password information is not in the junk mail folder, it can be re-sent to you. (If you have changed your password, this won't work - a new password has to be requested from Campus C&C. This request can be made by Student Services.)

2. I can log in but I can't see the course.

If you enrolled in the course today, it will take one business day for you to gain access to the Blackboard area. If you register on Friday, you may not have access until Monday afternoon.

If you have enrolled in the course more than one business day in the past, the course may not yet be available. The default setting on all Blackboard courses at UCR is that they become available on the day the course begins, which is the start date listed in the course catalog. The instructor can modify this and make the course available earlier or later, but most instructors don't do that.

3. I can log in but I can't see any/some of the course content.

Is your browser up to date? Check the browser tune up page for Blackboard & WebCT.

Do you have the latest version of Javascript? Check the plugin list.

Have you installed the plugins needed to view course content? If the instructor is using video clips, animations or graphics, you may need additional plugins to view that content.

4. I uploaded my work to the digital drop box but the instructor can't see it.

Did you send your work to your instructor? When you upload a file to the digital drop box, only you can see it. You need to click the send button so your instructor will have access to the file.

Does your filename contain any non-standard characters? Files with certain characters such as #, $, / and others can be uploaded and sent to the instructor, but they can't be viewed by the instructor. Filenames should only use alphanumeric characters and the underscore to be safe.
