Sexual Assault Examination Training: Adult/Adolescent
Online Program
(SAE, SANE, SAFE, SANC, FNE)
This comprehensive online program prepares qualified health care professionals
to perform forensic evaluations of adult and adolescent,
male and female sexual assault victims. Topics include
medical assessment of injuries, forensic terminology,
DNA, forensic wound identification, collection and
preservation of forensic specimens, toluidine blue
dye staining, Wood's lamp use, photography, chain of
custody procedures, the perpetrator forensic examination,
law enforcement investigation processes, advocate crisis
intervention, documentation, and preparation for court
testimony. This is a 40-hour course.
To complete the SAE training program, the participant must complete
a separate 45-hour internship comprised of clinical
and non-clinical examinations and observations.
Upon successful completion of the academic and internship portions of
the program, participants may begin practicing as a
sexual assault examiner (SAE, SAFE, SANC, FNE, SANE).

Objectives
Upon the completion of this course participants will:
- Describe the
evolution of the sexual assault examiner in the
United States.
- Define rape and
sexual assault according to her/his jurisdiction.
- State
the name of the district attorney and office location
most likely to prosecute the potential sexual assault
examiner's cases in the jurisdiction where the
SAE is to practice.
- Cite five examples
of case law affecting the prosecution of sexual
assault perpetrators which can be applied in the SAE's jurisdiction
of practice.
- Compare and contrast
elements of the Sexual Assault Examination as
it varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction (or state
to state).
- Knowledgeably collaborate with other crisis intervention personnel
and law enforcement personnel in the care of
the sexual assault victim.
- Describe the
investigative processes utilized to identify, charge
and prosecute suspected perpetrators.
- Knowledgeably establish
priorities of care for any sexual assault victim
presenting to the SAE.
Who Can Benefit
Qualified health care specialists include physicians, RNs, LVNs, LPNs, nurse
practitioners, physician assistants, and other licensed or registered health
care professionals. Law enforcement, attorneys and social services professionals
may benefit from the online course, but may not be eligible to participate
in the internship.
An application is required prior to registration.
Non-medical professionals who successfully complete the academic portion only
will receive a certificate specifying completion of the course only.

Delivery Method
The course is presented online. The course provides
an instructor and a defined time frame for completing
assignments, homework and required online sessions, i.e. discussion
boards or chat sessions between the students and the instructor. Each
course includes a required number of hours online with the instructor.
Participants are given assignments, homework, online quizzes or research
projects with due dates that are submitted digitally to the instructor.
Course materials are accessed online and are available 24/7. The final
exam is provided online and can be accessed during a specified period
of time.
Computer: You should have experience using a personal computer,
knowing how to use a keyboard and mouse, save and open
files, navigate the file system, print documents
and install simple software. You must have a CD-Rom
and Microsoft Word.
Internet: You should know how to open and close
browsers, bookmark URLs, input URLs into the location/address bar,
print, navigate the WWW and download files. Basic requirement includes
having a Web browser (Netscape 4.01 or higher or Internet Explorer
4.0 or higher). A high-speed Internet connection such as DSL or cable
is highly recommended.
E-mail: You should have an e-mail account
and know how to save and organize e-mails, as well as send and
open attachments.
