One of Extension's Rising Stars
Jagruti Patel
Jagruti Patel has always had a gift with children.
In Bombay, India, Jagruti was the eldest daughter. She readily
accepted and relished the role of taking care of her younger
siblings. As a devoted mother herself, Jagruti was active in the
lives of her own young children. She helped out her children's
schools, wrote stories for children that were published in an Indian
newspaper and became involved in children's theatre, making props and
helping to produce plays for the small actors.
When Jagruti arrived in the United States in 2000, she decided to
pursue her interest in childcare on a professional level. In 2001,
she enrolled in early childcare education classes at UC Riverside
Extension. Dr. Margi Wild, coordinator of Early Childhood and Family
Studies at UCR Extension, became Jagruti's mentor.
While Jagruti worked toward earning two certificates, in early
childhood education and early childhood center administration, she
also volunteered at La Sierra Child Care Center. Eventually, she
accepted employment at a childcare facility in Moreno Valley. Along
her path, Jagruti's goals became clearer.
"I had decided when we buy a house, I would like to have my own
daycare," Jagruti said.
In September of 2004, Jagruti's dream came true. She now runs her own
daycare out of her home in Redlands. In addition, she teaches in our
Early Childcare Education program here at UCR Extension.
Recently, she was elected as secretary for the Arrowhead Association
for Education of Young Children.
Jagruti is a sterling example of how our students chase and catch
their dreams. Still, Jagruti is humble and is quick to credit her
mentor and teachers for her successes.
"I did it with all the support and guidance of Dr. Margi Wild and my
teachers, Dr. Mary Flyr, Ana Monagas, and Debbie Whitaker," Jagruti
said.
Extension has offered early childcare education classes since 1987,
and we continue to expand and refine our programs. Currently, we
offer educational grants and stipends, funded by First 5 of
California, for early childcare providers who participate in our SBC-
CONNECTIONS and SBC-CARES programs. The grants and stipends enable
early childcare providers, which include family members and friends
who watch children in their own homes, to acquire additional
education and training.
If you work in early childcare education, we strongly encourage you
to contact Dr. Margi Wild at (951) 827-5995 to find out how you might
benefit from the SBC-CONNECTIONS and SBC-CARES program. Applications
are available now.
We look forward to seeing you this winter.
