One of Extension's Rising Stars

Barbara Toohey

Barbara TooheyBarbara Toohey has held a lot of jobs since graduating high school, working hard as a single mother to raise her only son.

She hardly expected to return to school and start a new career in her late 50s.

At 62, however, Barbara Toohey is the crime analyst for the Santa Barbara Police Department. She trained for the position while earning her certificate in Crime and Intelligence Analysis from UCR Extension in November of 2005.

"UCR Extension is one of three schools in California that offer this certificate," Barbara said. "I chose UCR Extension because you offer the best certificate."

So for a year and a half, Barbara traveled back and forth between Riverside and Santa Barbara. The Santa Barbara Police Department paid for her hotel and her education. Barbara earned her certificate in 18 months.

She was officially hired for the job in July of 2006. Today, she helps about 135 police officers, providing them with statistical information about crime in their town.

"I've lived in Santa Barbara for 25 years and I have worked throughout the city," Barbara said.

Today, however, as the city's only crime analyst, her eyes scan the streets more thoroughly. Her ears listen more keenly.

"I manage an apartment building for low-income seniors," Barbara said. "I have my eyes open in this town."

Santa Barbara had one homicide last year. The city's common crime problems include auto thefts, credit card fraud and burglaries.

Overall, Barbara said that Santa Barbara is "pretty quiet for a party town."

Barbara said despite the long commute, she loved the classes at UCR Extension. At least one of her instructors continued to assist her as Barbara worked on her new job.

"I thought the program was really great," Barbara said. "My son was really proud."
