This specialized study program offers English classes for adult learners in Riverside, California. These classes will help you improve your speaking, pronunciation, listening, reading, writing, and grammar in the English language. We offer beginning, intermediate, and advanced level classes. You will learn from professional teachers and assistant teachers.

You will practice English skills for everyday life. You will practice giving introductions, shopping, finding an apartment, making complaints, preparing for an interview, communicating at work, and more. When you successfully complete the highest level of the program, you will receive an award in English as a Second Language. You can list this award on your resume and job applications.

  • Students must be 18 years or older
  • Attend an information session and take a FREE placement test
  • Fill out an application
  • Enroll in classes:
    • Online
    • By calling UCR Extension Student Services at 951-827-4105
    • In person at the UCR Extension Student Services front desk
  • You have 3 years to complete the program


Prior to enrolling, please ensure that you have completed the following four course prerequisites:

NOTE: Required course prerequisites may vary based on your individual English-language mastery level. Prerequisites may be deemed met or waived by the program coordinator following the placement assessment. For specific questions in this area, please contact the program coordinator.


Our program is flexible. You can take a few classes, or you can complete the full program.

To complete the program, you must first attend the FREE information session and take the placement test. The placement test will tell you your level (beginning, intermediate or advanced).

Then, apply to the program and enroll in classes.
