Creating a GIS for Health Data

An introduction to GIS and how to query, analyze, geoprocess and visualize health data in order to reveal spatial and temporal patterns in disease morbidity and mortality data. This class will provide a comprehensive overview of GIS, including the major components of hardware, software, data, and the identification of skills need to implement a successful and effective Health GIS.  You will learn to:

  • demonstrate an understanding for the historical background of Medical Mapping/use of maps in Epidemiology
  • use and apply GIS to public health issues in order to spatially and temporally analyze data
  • join and relate spatial/nonspatial health data to feature classes for further analyses
  • Query, identify and select features by attribute/location using tools and scripts
  • Create and edit GIS files (shapefiles and geodatabsse)
  • Work with various data types (spatial and nonspatial)
  • Acquire publicly available GIS files and health-related data for analyses from federal or local health agencies, the Census Bureau, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the World Health Organization

You will also develop and demonstrate the abilities to plan, analyze, summarize and present on public health issues.
