The course examines competing theories of intellectual development, with special emphasis on Piaget's contributions to our understanding of sensori-motor intelligence. The importance of early development is extensively explored through recent findings in neuroscience, enriched vs. impoverished environments, effects of play, nutrition, quality of day-care, and early intervention studies.
