Lizards and snakes are among the most interesting and diverse but least known of the vertebrates that inhabit the desert southwest. Participants examine and identify reptiles beginning with a short identification and natural history presentation in the laboratory Friday night, before venturing into the habitats preferred by snakes and lizards on Saturday and Sunday. Explore several different ecological habitats including:

  • Sand dunes
  • Joshua Tree woodland
  • Creosote bush scrub
  • Volcanic lava fields and flows

close [x] Jason Wallace, M.S., Biological Science, Site Manager Steward, California State University Desert Studies Center, has a diverse background in both education and research, giving him an extensive understanding of desert organisms and ecology.  He is a part-time faculty member at California State University, Fullerton, and Orange Coast College, teaching Biology, Zoology, and Ecology.  He was also a zookeeper for seven years, caring for a wide variety of Central and South American animals, including exotic reptiles. Mr. Wallace has collaborated on a number of biological and ecological projects with various agencies, including NPS, BLM, US Fish & Wildlife, USGS, and the California Department of Fish & Wildlife.

Section Notes:

The course fee includes two nights' lodging at the Center (dormitory rooms & some couples rooms), and meals starting with breakfast Saturday through lunch on Sunday. Upon enrollment, you will be sent detailed information about the Center and what to bring. High clearance or 4WD vehicles are desirable but not required. Visitors not permitted. No refunds after May 10.
