Analysis of 7 Great Plays on Film

Course discussions and assignments include an overview of the selected plays, playwrights, films and filmmakers as well as analyses of the differences between stage plays and film, and how these seven great play texts translate into film. This class was inspired by the 2006 article by Richard Corliss in Time Magazine, "7 Greatest Plays on Film."

The seven films included in the course are:

  • A Streetcar Named Desire (1951)
  • The Miracle Worker (1962)
  • His Girl Friday (1940) (based on the 1928 play, "The Front Page")
  • Romeo and Juliet (1996)
  • The Importance of Being Earnest (2002)
  • The Lion in Winter (1968)
  • Cyrano de Bergerac (1990)
