Including Students with Significant Disabilities in General Education

Including Students with Significant Disabilities in General Education

Course Number: EDUC X450.11

4 units

Addresses the issues that arise when trying to successfully include students with significant disabilities with general education students. In a full inclusion model, Special Education students are provided with services and supports as needed; however, they do not need to "earn" their way into the general education classroom, because no student should be segregated from his or her peers. Students learn the benefits to non-handicapped students in this model, as well as those that accrue to the student with a disability. You will also discuss the challenges that teachers face, even when there are multiple supports, when students with disabilities are placed in their classroom. You will learn how to:

  • coordinate services
  • modify content
  • individualize instruction
  • address the functional skill needs of students with disabilities
