Learn the fundamentals of creating the high-quality documents companies use to communicate more clearly and effectively with their customers, employees, and partners. You will acquire the necessary skills to analyze the audience, create clear instructions to document tasks, and to use templates and automation to standardize documents using current technical document writing best practices.

Content Strategy

Learn the business value of content, how to access that value, the importance of content in the business environment, and related topics in internationalizing content in today's world. Combining lectures with hands-on assignments and readings, you will complete the course with a content strategy plan and content inventory.

Fundamentals of Technical Writing

Examines processes and formats involved in writing three of the most common technical documents: user guides, policy and procedure manuals, and proposals. The course expands on the development of writing skills and proper use of English. Students complete three projects.

Managing Content Projects

This course focuses on the management of technical writing projects. The entire process of technical documentation of projects is examined, including determining the project scope, developing the information plan, estimating page counts, planning milestones and ensuring quality. Creating and updating project plans, documentation plans and content plans are also covered.

Writing Documentation for APIs

APIs are a cornerstone of application development and today's programmers rely on these tools to build reliable systems. Without good reference documentation, APIs are unusable. Gain a basic understanding of APIs and their uses and learn how to create documentation about all aspects of the API including data structures, function structures, and any critical constraints. Note: This class does not require you to be a programmer, but you will be writing for a programming audience so you need to learn programming terminology and concepts.

Learn the mechanics of producing a ready-to-submit proposal document. Topics include: analyzing the request for submission, project research, planning, budget development, partnerships, document preparation, and writing the proposal.

An introduction to the DITA XML architecture. DITA is a technical communication tool increasingly used by companies for structuring, developing, managing, and publishing information.

An introduction to Madcap Flare, an authoring tool used by technical writers to create technical documentation for online Help, software documentation, policy and procedure manuals, knowledge bases, and user guides. The course is portfolio-based, and you will author a final project incorporating multiple elements of Madcap Flare features and tools.

Documenting Policies and Procedures

The basics of developing and writing organizational policies and task-based procedures. Various types of policy and procedure documentation are covered as are research techniques, appropriate presentation methods and legal issues. The emphasis is on the systematic gathering of information and presenting clear and concise policies and procedures. Among the projects in this category are company handbooks, human resource policies, payroll procedures and quality improvement documentation (including ISO 9000).
