Compensation Administration

A survey of compensation programs as applied to the various segments, functions and levels of the work force, including legal provisions. Topics include job evaluation and analysis techniques; relating job performance to compensation; wages and incentive plans; utilization of wage and salary surveys; highlighting and communicating contributions to health care, retirement and other benefits within compensation plans; evaluating outsourced contractor compensation levels and agreements; training and development and other non-financial compensation issues.

Employee Recruitment, Selection and Retention

Examination of the recruitment and staffing process, including preparing a job analysis and description, recruiting, interviewing and selecting candidates, conducting tests and background checks, selecting and evaluating references, constructing the "offer," and preparing documentation for new hires. Participants explore the legal aspects of recruitment and selection, reviewing applicant pools, equal opportunity considerations and other legal requirements to minimize legal challenges to the search process. Global issues related to retention are also covered, including analyzing the importance of "fit," ensuring applicants are effectively trained and supported, and how to minimize turnover within the organization.

Human Resources Management

A comprehensive overview of the mission, purpose and structure of human operations within an industrial, service or public organization. Concepts covered include the function of human resources as it relates to organizational mission; the fundamentals of employee selection, performance appraisal, discipline and compensation; management and organizational structure; supervision; communications; legal issues; training and staff development; relations with unions; strategic planning; and current trends in human resources management. This course is appropriate for human resource professionals, managers, supervisors and individuals interested in organizational leadership and development.

Labor and Employee Relations

Participants survey the major aspects of labor-employee relations in union and non-union environments. Topics include: constructive employee discipline and employee relations issues; current laws and compliance, including the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), sexual harassment, discrimination, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and wrongful discharge. Time is also given to discuss strategies to help maintain proactive communication with employees and current issues in employee relations.

Effective Performance Management

This course focuses on creating and managing a high performance workforce, which is the critical component of organizational success. You will examine the current thinking and the impacts on human performance including the aging workforce, globalization, the home-based workforce, technology and management of knowledge. You will address ways to achieve performance goals by monitoring and measuring the effectiveness of performance for both individuals and the organization. Measurement tools and techniques will be explored, as well as how to design and deliver performance recognition and rewards. The design and implementation of training programs for adult learners will also be covered and will include job skills, career development, leadership development and team building skills. You will learn how to create an effective and efficient performance support system to achieve optimal organizational and individual performance.

Society for Human Resource Management-Certified Professional (SHRM-CP)/Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) Certification Training

Provides an overview of key areas in human resources management. Materials include five learning modules built on one singular SHRM Body of Competency and Knowledge designed to elevate the HR professional to national and international standards. The functional areas are leadership and navigation, business expertise, ethical practice, relationship management, consultation, critical evaluation, global and cultural effectiveness, and communication, as defined by Society for Human Resource Management-Certified (SHRM) Learning System. You will discuss and explore strategic management, workforce planning and employment, human resources development, compensation and benefits, employee and labor relations, and occupational health, safety and security. Intended for managers and staff with experience in general management or human resources management, including professionals wishing to take the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP exams and those seeking career change and professional development. Analysis of employee benefit planning, policy formulation, organization and implementation in relation to the overall personnel program. Concepts covered include the advantages and disadvantages of fixed and flexible benefit packages, cost containment and the influence of employee attitudes concerning benefit planning. Emphasizes the need for employee-employer communications relative to benefits and forecasts future development trends in employee benefits.

Organizational Behavior Dynamics

An examination of organizational culture including understanding and managing work behavior, perceptions and emotions, motivation and stress; developing work environments that align with organizational culture; providing evaluation, feedback and rewards that model constructive behavior; and managing misbehavior. Attention is also given to group dynamics including work teams, managing conflict, negotiations, power, politics, empowerment, communication, decision-making, leadership, organizational structure and design, managing change, innovation and creativity.

This course provides an in-depth investigation of employee appraisal and evaluation as a tool of development and motivation. Topics include: traditional methods of employee evaluation, their values and limitations. Considerations and difficulties in measuring performance and productivity. Management by objectives as a technique for evaluating and measuring results of individual as well as group performance.

Principles of Risk and Insurance Management

Introduction to risk and insurance management as applied to the work environment. Risk control, risk financing and claims administration will be explored. Among topics covered are the legal framework, insurance coverages, self-insurance options, loss reduction/prevention techniques, the relationship to workers' compensation and employee benefits. Case studies and current issues will be examined.

Employee Training and Development

The course provides an in-depth investigation of employee training and development as a tool to achieve critical organizational tactical and strategic plans. The focus will be on the design of training programs and the simultaneous measurement of training results. Students will be introduced to modern learning theories and resources, and will learn how to design, plan and organize training programs for employees. The course will also cover how to measure the effectiveness of training programs through measurement and evaluation.
