Developing the Real Number System

Basic mathematical skills to enhance conceptual understanding and improve teachers' content skills for teaching mathematics in K-8 classrooms. Topics include real number systems with an emphasis on concepts of whole numbers, factors, fractions and decimals. Instruction also provides an introduction to algebraic concepts and techniques for understanding and solving linear equations of one variable. For teaching mathematics in middle and high school classrooms.

Fundamental Concepts of Geometry - Part I

Introduction and review of Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometric concepts and instructional strategies for teaching geometry. Problem-solving and critical thinking skills, logic, and inductive and deductive reasoning will be highlighted while covering such topics as angles, area, volume, polygons, quadrilaterals, parallels, polyhedras, tessellations, circles, similarity, congruence and topology. For teaching mathematics in middle and high school classrooms.

Strategies for Effective Mathematics Instruction

Utilizing the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) and Standards for Mathematical Practice (MP), participants develop strategies to enhance their teaching pedagogy and incorporate the content and depth of understanding set forth by the CCSSM. For teaching mathematics in middle and high school classrooms.

Developing the Real Number System - Part B

Review of basic concepts of the real number system that emphasize concepts of whole numbers, factors, fractions and decimals. Fundamentals such as relationship between expressions, equations, inequalities and graphs needed for understanding algebraic concepts are presented. For teaching mathematics in middle and high school classrooms.

Linear Algebra

Based on the concepts of rate and ratio, this course addresses topics that lead to an understanding of linear functions and equations. Topics include functions concepts, direct proportion as linear functions, linear functions of one variable, system of linear equations, system of linear inequalities and family of lines. Advanced algebraic concepts. Topics include: fractional exponents of positive numbers, operations on polynomials, functions and inverse functions, inverse proportion, square and square roots, and quadratic polynomials. An in-depth look at Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometric concepts.
