Explore various research driven methods of questioning in a Common Core classroom, such as the 6 levels of Bloom's Taxonomy, Webb's Depth of Knowledge, and the Rigor and Relevance Framework.  You will learn to understand how these methods are a critical part of the curriculum, instruction, and assessment of a highly effective Common Core State Standards classroom.  Also discussed will be Close Reading, a strategy that uncovers layers to understanding text, and promotes critical thinking.

Fundamental structure of the Framework K-12 Science Education and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Includes an overview of the structure of NGSS; the framework vision; disciplinary core ideas in physical, life, earth and space sciences; engineering, technology, and application of sciences; scientific and engineering practices; and crosscutting concepts. Modeling and hands-on activities appropriate for K-12 classroom are presented.

Instructional Design and Differentiation in a Social Science Common Core Classroom

Designed to give an in-depth analysis and comprehensive of overview of California's Social Science/History Common Core State Standards, and how to use them in your lesson planning and instruction. You will learn to design units of study that will focus on the guiding principles and skills that students will develop throughout each lesson. These lessons will use strategic pedagogy that lends itself to include direct instruction and project-based learning. You will also learn to incorporate depth of knowledge, build complexity over time, complete formative and performance-based assessments, and develop an understanding of how to analyze student works to meet these standards.

Common Core Instruction with Special Needs Learners

This course explores how teachers can assure that students with learning disabilities have access to the core curriculum and the same opportunities to succeed as typical learners. Students will understand how learning disabilities manifest themselves and learn approaches such as multi-dimensional instruction, backwards planning, study skills methods, structured peer interaction, and aspects of the Universal Design for Learning that benefits all students, regardless of their preferred learning style.

Maker Innovations for Educators

An introduction to Maker Education. Participants will learn the principles behind the Maker movement and its connections to STEAM education. Innovative strategies and resources for including Maker-style, hands-on activities in a variety of educational environments such as classrooms, libraries, and community service spaces will be explored. You will also discuss ways to connect Maker Education to STEAM Education practices, NGSS, CCCS, Growth Mindset, Project based learning and curriculum standards; Maker strategies for your educational environment; resources available for developing Maker activities; how to plan a Makerspace for an accessible space; and Maker activities that are immediately applicable to any environment.
