Principles of Plant Growth

Covers the physical and biological principles of plant processes involving assimilation, metabolism and regulation of growth and development. Provides an understanding of the function of internal plant structures, such as cells and tissues, and of organs such as roots and their relation to soils. The effects of plant hormones on growth and development are explored as well as mechanisms that protect plants from environmental stressors.

Turfgrass Species and Applications

Students learn to identify different turf species by observing certain obvious features or keys that are specific to each plant. Also studied are other plant characteristics, such as growth patterns, color, hardiness and texture, that aid in the identification and determination of the best application for each species. Cultural practices for each species are discussed. Propagation methods, such as seeding, stolonizing and sodding, are also covered.

Math for Turfgrass and Landscape Managers

Learn the basic formulas and calculations that apply to a wide variety of tasks in turfgrass and landscape management. In order to establish confidence and a comfort level, the class begins with fundamental problem solving methods, including measurements and solutions that pertain to determining sizes of areas or volume amounts. Calculations discussed include methods of calibration for using pesticides, fertilizers and other materials and basic formulas used in surveying, determining tree failure potential, and pipe sizing and friction loss in irrigation and pump efficiency. An emphasis is placed on learning basic Excel, as there are numerous formulas that can be utilized within this spreadsheet.

Foundations of Turfgrass Management

An overview of turfgrass management and related fields for aspiring or current turf managers. The course provides technical training and helps students identify areas for further study. Technical topics include turfgrass varieties and applications, pest management, fertilizers, soils, irrigation, and environmental protection. In addition to the scientific aspects of turfgrass management, the student is given an understanding of the responsibilities involved in managing a turf-related facility.

Management Skills for Turfgrass and Landscape Managers

An introduction to the broad array of skills required to manage a turfgrass or landscape facility. Students prepare both operational and capital budgets for a facility in their areas of interest. The methods and importance of recordkeeping, purchasing and inventory control, personnel, project management, risk management and regulatory compliance issues are covered. Students also learn how to write a memorandum and business letter.

Turfgrass Irrigation and Drainage

This course covers the design, installation, maintenance and operation of modern irrigation and drainage systems for large turf areas. Factors that affect irrigation system design are addressed, including cost, quality and quantity of available water, level of turf use, budget considerations, and drainage capability. Irrigation equipment, including sprinklers, valves, piping, and control systems, is reviewed for a variety of situations. Different pumping systems are compared for effectiveness and efficiency.

Turfgrass Pests

This course stresses preventing diseases, insects and weeds through the incorporation of recommended cultural maintenance strategies including proper irrigation, fertilization and mowing height. Emphasis is also placed on identification and early detection of pest problems and the use of integrated pest management practices. An update of currently registered pesticides for each pest and the effectiveness of these chemicals is included as well as a discussion of any known tolerances and/or resistances and adverse environmental impacts.

Pesticide Use on Turfgrass and Ornamental Plants

This course provides the student with an understanding of federal and State of California laws and regulations regarding pesticide usage. Also covered are the different formulations of pesticides available, their categories of risk and how they are selected. Determining how and when pesticides can be utilized in an integrated pest control program will be a focal point of the class as well. Successful completion of the course helps to prepare students who wish to test for, or add categories to, a Pest Control Advisor License (PCA), a Qualified Applicator License (QAL), or a Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC).

Soil Fertility and Fertilizers

Physical and chemical properties of soils and fertilizer materials are examined. The roles of nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, as well as minor and trace elements involved in plant growth, are explored. Students correct soil fertility problems through testing, applying soil amendments or commercial fertilizers, and improving irrigation quality.

Introduction to Chemistry for Environmental and Agricultural Professionals

A general introduction to inorganic and organic chemistry with emphasis on the states of matter, atomic structure, radioactivity, nature of bonding, relationship of bonding to chemical reactivity, reaction types, energy, reaction rates, chemical characteristics of selected series of elements and compounds, and natural products. Illustration through laboratory demonstrations of chemical and physical properties. Includes a review of mathematical concepts. Designed for persons with technical responsibilities in environmental management or agriculture who either lack a background or need a refresher in chemistry.
